Jesus Falls for the Second Time

O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! Offer me Thy helping hand, and aid me, that I may not fall again into my former sins. From this very moment, I will earnestly strive to reform: nevermore will I sin! Thou, O sole support for the weak, by Thy grace, without which I can do nothing, strengthen me to carry out faithfully this my resolution.

Psalm 63:2-9

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you;
my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you,
in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

I think this is a nice picture of this church. I would have photoshop out the power line but that is no easy task to remove it from the brick.  Maybe someday when I have more time.

Paschal Candle

The flame of the Paschal candle symbolizes Christ as light of the world and his presence in the midst of his people. The Paschal candle is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle." The term "Paschal" comes from the word Pesach, which in Hebrew means Passover. The tall white candle in many ways signifies the Divine pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that lead the Israelites in their Exodus from slavery in Egypt.

150 Year Recognition/Celebration Banner for Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Egypt Ohio. It is simply amazing how old and well kept these churches are.

Rosary Beads

Luke 2: 34-35.

34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

This is one of those that I kept trying and was never satisfied with the results until now. This is probably the 3rd time I taken pictures of this statue.

St. Therese (Little Flower)

This very unusual stained glass window of St. Theresa can be found in the Saint Joseph Church in Egypt. I've posted this before but dusted it off and gave it a new look. It will be featured as part of a collage of stained glass windows in the church in the up coming show.

Click the link below for more insight on the imagery and symbolism the artist used in this window.

Flight To Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15)

Full pane stained glass window with Mary, Joseph, Jesus and Donky fleeing to Egypt When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."

This stained glass window showing the Holy Family escaping to Egypt is found in the Saint Joseph Church in Egypt Ohio just out side of Minster. I was very fortunate in that I met Dave Osterloh and he was kind enough to forward some of the history of the church that was compiled by his mother Barb Osterloh. The following is an excerpt from her manuscript.

Vividly colored stained glass windows (installed Sept. 1939). Of particular interest is the window depicting Mary's Flight Into Egypt, which commemorates a convent of that name which stood at Egypt from 1857 to 1912 and was an important part of the community. A picture of the convent hangs in the vestibule of the church.

Thanks David and Barb for sharing some of the history of this church. There was a whole lot more that David sent me and I hope to share more of it in future post.

Welcome to Egypt

Located just a few miles outside of Minster on State Route 364 is Egypt. Not much there but St. Joseph Church, built in 1887.

There I met with David (The German Egyptian) be sure to check out his blog. His family originally owned the land that the church now sets on.

It was great meeting and talking with David. He had some great history on the church. Unfortunately my senior brain doesn't hold much, so I am hoping to get back with David, with pen and paper at the ready for the next post.

The above picture is one of my favorite side altar shots. The church was full of great photo opportunities. And as usual I flubbed some of them. I will definitely be coming back for a re-shoot.

There was this great stained glass window with Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt that will have to wait until the next post. However I was real happy with the way this one of the Institution of the Eucharist came out.

Both David and I thought the expression on Jesus' face in this one was rather interesting.

This church has plenty of stained glass windows big and small. This one of Jesus praying in the Garden in one of my favorites.

I'll close with this window that I found very interesting. To me it looks like Mary, Baby Jesus, St. Therese, and Veronica's veil. Not sure how to connect the dots on this one.

Click the link provided by Maria for the Story of St. Therese. It explains the window quite well. Little Flower

Look to see Return to Egypt in an upcoming post soon.
