Mary, Great with Child

When I consider women, meek or proud,
how God regarded her, her low estate,
young Mary, great with child! Her Child is great!

Easter Prayer of St. Hippolytus

This very modern Resurrected Christ can be found in the St. Henry Church in St. Henry. The modern interior of this church differs greatly from the other churches in the area.

St. Henry (Lord Jesus, crucified, Have mercy on us!)

As mentioned previously everything in this church is modern. A stark contrast to its architecture. Pictured here is a modern rendition of Station XI, (Jesus Nailed to the Cross).



I find it interesting that the feet are bound and not nailed and that the nails pierce the wrist and not the hands. The little basket to the right contains the implements used in the Crucifixion. It doesn't show up very well here. I guess I should have taken a close-up of it

St. Henry (Holy Family) St. Henry

Everything in this church is modern including this altar with the Holy Family I found off to the side.



Those familure with the church will note that the colors do not quite match. There was not much contrast between the wall and the carved figures in original so I took a little artistic license with the image.

St. Henry (Resurected Christ Main Altar)

A while back I posted a picture of the main altar of the Saint Henry Church. I was not very happy with the picture and vowed to make a return trip someday. Well I got to make the trip this Holiday Weekend.



It was an added bonus to find the altar decked out with a Fall theme.

St. Henry Church pre-Vatican II

In response to some questions about what St. Henry looked like pre-Vatican II, Rick Barr of the Catholic Telegraph sent me this photo.



I have the attached image of the magnificent altar of St. Henry Church pre-Vatican II. The photo in our files is undated and I don’t know who took the photo. Coincidentally, I scheduled a post about St. Henry Parish for the CT photo blog this morning.

Saint Henry (Archive)

Sill more from the old archive. I took these sometime ago. I was not all that happy with the pictures and wanted to come back and do a re-shoot. However, every time I've come back to take pictures the church has been busy.



I case you are wondering about all the archive post. I am running low on disk space so I am trying to kill two birds with one stone. Get back in the grove of posting for the Cross Tipped Church blog and clean up my hard-drive.



I want to start fresh when I start taking pictures again. I am going to change the way I post and the format once again. I will cover that in more detail in my September Weekly Journal post when I make it.

St. Henry and Sacred Heart of Jesus (Statues)

Only two of the eight churches on the Scenic Byway The Land of the Cross Tipped Churches have statues above the door. The Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Henry. This is a picture I took of St. Henry on one of the days that the church was busy. Click here to learn more about St. Henry.

This is the statue of Jesus that oversees and greets you at The Sacred Heart of Jesus church.

Birds seem to be an issue for both locations.

Name That Spire

The Land of the Cross Tipped Churches gets its name from the cross tipped spires we all see as we drive the country side. The Ohio Byway features eight churches.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus
St. Augustine
St. John
St. Rose
The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
St. Henry
St. Joseph
St. Anthony

Without the spires there simply would not be a "Land of the Cross Tipped Churches" Ohio Scenic Byway.


Here they can be found dotting the skyline along with water towers and silos. There is a point on the byway that you can see three cross tipped spires at once: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Rose and St. John.

Just like the churches themselves in that they they are similar but yet unique, these eight cross tipped spires are all different. Can you identify what Cross Tipped Spire goes with which church? You'll find the answers at the bottom of this post.
