Wow, Catholic churches are a religious world of their own. Every time I come to visit, I see something else that I've never seen in a baptist church. Our churches are so simple compared.
They do have a rich history for sure. You normally only find large shrines like this in a very large church. I E-Mailed the church for more info and they said it is believed the originating priest had a devotion for her and built the shrine for the relic in the altar.
If you Google her you will find her story 11000 virgins a very interesting one.
I also found it interesting that -- in 1969 the reigning Pope lowered her status from being a saint. I am still investigating this.
